What is acupuncture?
Traditional Acupuncture is a holistic healthcare system that strives to re-balance the Body Mind and Spirit. Unwanted symptoms are seen to be evidence of imbalance and once the body is re-aligned the symptoms will improve or disappear. Each person is treated as a unique individual with the treatments tailor made for their own special situation.
What does it involve?
The main principle of Acupuncture is that circulating throughout our bodies is a vital energy called Qi (pronounced chee). The Qi runs through meridians or channels which resemble the circulatory system and may become blocked or weakened with the stresses and strains of modern life. The acupuncturist is trained to use a variety of diagnostic techniques. Once the imbalance is diagnosed, fine needles are inserted into specific points on the meridians. The needles act like lock gates on a canal or switches on an electrical circuit; they control and direct the flow of Qi and allow the body to re-establish its own natural balance.

Acupuncture for women
I have been specialising in women’s medicine since I began my practise in 1982. It started naturally as friends were having period problems. Fertility and pregnancy issues followed. Lately I am treating the daughters of these women and also menopausal women that I first treated as teenagers.
I offer hormone balancing and support for a range of issues. The treatment is very useful for fertility support and IVF etc
I offer support throughout pregnancy and often during birth and the postpartum period. I have assisted thousands of women with pregnancy and attended over one hundred births.
The history of acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine that pre-dates recorded history. Traditional Chinese Medicine is founded upon the ancient principles of Yin and Yang which emerged from the 8,000 year old Taoist tradition.
Approximately 1000 BC, during the Shang Dynasty, hieroglyphs showed evidence of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. At the same time bronze needles were excavated from ruins. The first
book written about acupuncture appeared approx 305BC. This was The Nei Jing or Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine.
Modern acupuncture still contains a connection to its ancient roots though it is very much a contemporary and progressive system in China today, sitting alongside western medicine in hospitals and clinics.
